Sure, there aren’t any vehicles used during the fictional competition, because none of its teenage participants are old enough to drive (not that there are cars in this post-apocalyptic world, aside from hover vehicles that remove victims’ remains).

But if you were trapped in uncharted wilderness and needed a way to survive, we’d recommending boning up on your archery skills, just as Katniss Everdeen has done for years.

Since there’s the option in today’s world, we’d also suggest testing a few off-road vehicles, known for their ability to battle any terrain.

Hunger Games – The Official Trailer

Hunger Games opens in theaters across the nation today. Here are some rides we think are best for off-road survival in life or death competition:

Land Rover Defender

With 65 years of service under its belt, Land Rover’s Defender is a powerhouse, with enough horses to almost vertically climb a mountain, or plow through heavy mud, even thick snowdrifts. For decades, Land Rover vehicles were the most utilitarian of trucks, pulling cargo loads and supplies for British infantry forces stationed globally. It’s good on diesel, and can handle a few shots from a bow and arrow.

Jeep – WWII Edition

“Willy” was the first Jeep vehicle, produced for WWII troops and generals operating in Germany. It could travel partially submerged and tackle deep Nazi mud traps. Over time, this Jeep has evolved to both a military and civilian model.

Modern Jeep Wranglers, based on this original, come in both two and four wheel drive, as well as two and four doors. We suggest digging up a classic used war ride.

Syrian BTR-50PK Tank

The BTR-50 (Bronetransporter – “armored transporter”) was originally a Soviet tank, now used by both the People’s Republic of China and Syrian military. The BTR-50 is a tracked vehicle, different than others in the BTR series, which are wheeled. This all-terrain ride can operate in temperatures between -40 °C and +40 °C. It’s is powered by an intense V6 4-stroke in-line water-cooled diesel engine, producing 240-hp at 1,800 rpm. BTR-50 carries various calibers of machine guns as well.

Toyota Hilux

Once you hit icy wilderness, a Toyota Hilux might come in handy. This AWD pick-up took on a 483-mile skiing challenge in the Arctic. With an ability to carry 2.5 ton loads, the specially made tires don’t slip on ice or get jammed in snow drifts. During other challenges, the Hilux covered more than 2,000 miles across the frozen terrain, in temps nearing -30C.

Russian BRDM Patrol Vehicle

This Russian Combat & Patrol mini-tank is fully equipped with food rations, guns and ammo, rocket launchers, and a 4-wheel-drive powertrain. Why is a heavy tank good off-road? Because this brick can climb steep mountains or float across lakes and rivers.
